Hurricane AC Prep: Before the Storm Is in the Forecast

A little prep early in the season saves you a scramble later.

• Schedule a pre-season tune-up. A technician can catch loose electrical connections, worn parts, or refrigerant issues that a storm’s power surges or flooding could turn into a much bigger (and more expensive) problem.
• Trim trees and branches near your outdoor unit. Falling limbs are one of the most common causes of storm-related condenser damage in our area.
• Check that your condenser pad is level and stable. A unit sitting on a cracked or sinking pad is more likely to shift or flood during heavy rain.
• Know your system’s shutoff. Make sure you (or whoever’s home) knows where the breaker for your HVAC system is, in case you need to power it down quickly.

When a Storm Watch or Warning Is Issued

Once the National Hurricane Center issues a watch or warning for our area, it’s time to act.

• Turn off and unplug the outdoor unit. Power surges and lightning strikes during storms are a leading cause of compressor damage. Switch off the breaker dedicated to your outdoor condenser.
• Secure or cover the outdoor unit if you can do so safely. You don’t need a full enclosure — just reduce direct exposure to wind-driven debris. Never fully wrap or seal the unit in plastic, which can trap moisture and cause corrosion.
• Clear the area around the unit. Move patio furniture, potted plants, trash cans, and anything else that could become a projectile or block drainage.
• Check your attic insulation and ductwork if a storm surge or flooding is possible. Water intrusion into ductwork is one of the most common — and most overlooked — sources of post-storm mold and air quality problems.

AC Prep After the Storm Passes

Resist the urge to just flip the power back on and hope for the best.

• Do a visual inspection first. Look for obvious debris, standing water, or visible damage around the outdoor unit before restoring power.
• Wait before restarting. If the unit was submerged or sat in standing water, don’t turn it back on — call a technician. Running a flooded compressor can cause serious, sometimes irreversible damage.
• Listen and watch for warning signs. Unusual noises, weak airflow, or a musty smell when you do restart the system are all reasons to get it inspected rather than waiting to see if it “works itself out.”
• Check your indoor air quality. Extended power outages and humidity spikes after a storm create ideal conditions for mildew and musty buildup, especially in ductwork. If your home was without AC for more than a day or two during Alabama’s humidity, it’s worth having your system and ducts checked.

When to Call a Professional vs. Handle It Yourself

Clearing debris, trimming branches, and flipping a breaker are all things you can safely do yourself. But if you’re dealing with any of the following, it’s time to call in a professional rather than guess:

• The unit was in standing water or visibly flooded
• You hear grinding, clicking, or buzzing sounds on restart
• The system runs but isn’t cooling effectively
• You smell mustiness or notice visible growth near vents or ductwork
• You’re simply not sure it’s safe to power back on

That last one matters more than people think. Running a damaged system, even briefly, can turn a simple repair into a full replacement.
