Fall HVAC Maintenance in Mobile, AL: What to Check Before You Need the Heat

Along the Gulf Coast, fall doesn’t always feel like fall. Your air conditioner may still be running in the afternoon, even as cooler mornings start to arrive. That makes this a good time to check on your HVAC system—while you can still address a problem before you need the heat.

Here are a few practical steps for homeowners in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Start with the air filter

Check your filter and replace it if it’s dirty. A clogged filter can restrict airflow and make it harder for your system to keep your home comfortable. Write the replacement date on the filter frame or set a phone reminder so it doesn’t get forgotten.

Use the filter size and type recommended for your system. If you’re unsure which one belongs in your unit, ask your HVAC technician.

Check your vents and outdoor unit

Walk through your home and make sure supply and return vents aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Outside, clear away leaves and other loose debris around the unit. Give it room for airflow, but leave internal cleaning and repairs to a professional.

Give the heat a brief test

Before the first chilly night, switch your thermostat to heat and make sure the system responds. It may take a few minutes to start delivering warm air.

If it doesn’t turn on, blows cool air continuously, makes an unusual noise, or gives off a persistent burning smell, turn it off and schedule a service visit. If you have a gas furnace and smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services.

Don’t overlook lingering cooling problems

Fall maintenance isn’t only about heating. If your AC struggled to cool the house, leaked water, or left rooms feeling unusually humid this summer, mention it when you schedule service. Those symptoms deserve a closer look even if the system seems to be running normally today.

What happens during a professional fall check?

The work depends on the equipment in your home. A technician may inspect electrical connections and controls, check airflow, examine the condensate drain, and test heating operation. For a gas heating system, safety checks are especially important.

A maintenance visit is also a chance to ask questions. If something needs repair, you should understand what the technician found and what your options are before approving the work.

Schedule service before the first cold snap

You don’t have to wait until the heat stops working to call. A little preparation now can help you head into cooler weather with more confidence.
